    Actually, Tecún Umán was defeated by Don Pedro de Alvarado. The legend says that Tecún tried to kill Alvarado, but killed his horse instead, because he thought they were the same being. So, when Alvarado killed Tecún with his sword, the Quetzal (the national bird of Guatemala) sat on Tecún's chest and wept. The bird got blood on his chest, and since then, every quetzal has a red chest...
